What is the Bitterroot Food Co-op?    The Bitterroot Food Co-op is an organization of local people who share one vision:   a full-service storefront that provides a source of fresh organic and natural foods and household products year round.

More than just a natural food store, the Bitterroot Food Co-op is the backbone of a community local food system made up of producers, members and consumers.

Why a Co-op Now?  Read this Letter to the President by Michael Pollan.  It lays out beautifully what is needed in our nation's food system.

In our Co-op, all shoppers will have a dependable source of natural foods and know where their food is coming from.   Foods can be harvested and sold at the peak of freshness and flavor.   Members enjoy many benefits, including reduced prices and special offers.

Producers will have a dependable, year-round local outlet for their goods, which supports the local economy and reduces their dependence on petroleum products.   The entire Bitterroot Valley benefits from an increase in sustainable farmland, which protects valuable air and water resources.   And finally, many people feel self-sufficiency is an important component of a secure local food system.

Forming a cooperative doesn’t happen overnight.  The task force involved in organizing the BFC began working on the project in late 2004. They’ve taken surveys to assess interest, investigated existing cooperatives and are ready to complete the necessary paperwork for incorporation in the State of Montana under MCA, Title 35, Chapter 15.

Sustainable Living Systems has been the sponsor of this project and also has a new project to form a community Coalition to guide a Community Food Assessment and engage in a planning process to build a secure local food system.  Visit:   Community Food Project.
